A woman was killed Monday morning when she walked into traffic on Interstate 895 near Potee Street, Maryland Transportation Authority police said.
The woman, who could not immediately be identified, crossed the southbound lanes of the highway, climbed over the median wall and was hit by two vehicles at about 7:10 a.m. as she entered the northbound lanes, police spokesman Lt. Kevin Ayd said. She was pronounced dead at the scene, he said.
It's not clear why she was crossing the interstate, Ayd said. She was not carrying identification, so police are awaiting DNA results so they can notify her family, he said.
Both vehicles stayed at the scene, and all the northbound traffic lanes approaching the Harbor Tunnel were blocked Monday morning after the crash, but have since reopened.
A four-vehicle crash also blocked the left lane and right shoulder of I-895 southbound past Exit 12 for Lombard Street.
