All lanes of the outer loop of Interstate 695 were closed north of Route 10 following a two-vehicle accident Monday afternoon, according to Maryland Transportation Authority Police.
The accident occurred about 3:30 p.m. when a pickup truck rear-ended a tractor trailer, said 1st Sgt. Jonathan Green, a MdTA Police spokesman.
The driver of the pickup was transported to Maryland Shock Trauma Center, Green said. The driver's condition was not immediately available. The tractor trailer driver was also transported for medical care, but had less serious injuries, Green said.
Green did not have an estimate for when I-695 would be reopened to traffic. All traffic was being diverted onto Route 10 about 4:20 p.m., he said.
"We're trying to get one of them open as soon as possible," he said of outer loop lanes.
Also on Monday, one person was injured in a three-vehicle accident near the southbound entrance to the new express toll lanes on Interstate 95, the MdTA said.
Maryland State Police said the accident occurred just before 3 p.m. near White Marsh, but had few details. The accident briefly closed the toll lanes, but they had reopened as of about 4:20 p.m.
The toll lanes opened free of charge a week ago for drivers to get accustomed to the new traffic patterns on the highway. Drivers started getting charged to use the lanes on Saturday.
The lanes, two in each direction, were built up the center of the highway, between its standard northbound and southbound travel lanes. Traffic patterns were shifted to facilitate merging between the tolled and standard lanes.
It was not immediately clear what caused the accident.
