City assessing sewage spill into Jones Falls

Officials at the city Department of Public Works say a sanitary sewer overflowed into the Jones Falls on Friday. Officials said the overflow occurred underground in East Baltimore from a designed outflow, and did not spill onto streets.

Structured overflows were designed as part of Baltimore's sewer system about 100 years ago, officials said, but are being eliminated as part of the city's $1 billion sewer rehabilitation. Department officials said a preliminary evaluation determined the overflow volume exceeded 10,000 gallons, but on Saturday officials did not yet have an assessment of exactly how much had been spilled.
