His body was found around 8 a.m. in the north prong of the river, just north of the Route 50 drawbridge, police said.

Police Captain Rich Kaiser said alcohol played a role in the incident, but that police are still investigating how Hitchens entered the water. Police do not suspect foul play, Kaiser said.

Hitchens was wearing a black orthopedic boot, Kaiser said.

The body is being transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore for an autopsy.

Employees of a nearby business spotted the body and called police this morning, Kaiser said.

"It doesn't appear to be anything suspicious at this time," he said.

Police ask anyone who saw Hitchens between Saturday and Monday to call the Salisbury Police Department Criminal Investigation Division at 410-548-3113.
