A luxury apartment complex under construction in Rockville caught fire early Tuesday morning, escalating to three alarms as crews fought to get it under control, officials said.
The Gables Upper Rock Apartments, at 40 Upper Rock Circle in Rockville, has a new section of apartments set to open in early 2014 and was unoccupied at the time. Firefighters were called to the scene at about 4:15 a.m., Montgomery County fire officials said.
Flames could be seen engulfing the building in pictures released by the fire department. No injuries were reported, but roads in the area, including Shady Grove Road near Interstate 270, were closed.
The fire was called under control at 6 a.m., fire officials said, but the buildings were significantly damaged and crews were expected to remain fighting hot spots for an extended period of time. About 200 firefighters, 13 engines and two trucks responded to the scene, fire officials said.
