Maryland Capitol Police officer fires at stolen car

An off-duty Maryland Capitol Police officer fired at least one shot Saturday afternoon after a man jumped into his vehicle and drove off with his special needs child still inside, Baltimore police said.

The incident occurred in the 1500 block of Homestead St. in Northeast Baltimore, city police said.

A city police spokesman said the Maryland Capitol Police officer was unloading items when the suspect got into his vehicle and drove off. The officer then fired at the vehicle, police said.

The child was located, unharmed, a few blocks away. City police later located the unattended vehicle on East 30th St.

The suspect has not been located. City police detectives are investigating the incident, along with a special team that scrutinizes the use of force by officers.
