Pier at HarborView collapses

A portion of the pier at the HarborView residential community collapsed and plunged into the Inner Harbor late Friday night, diverting Water Taxi service in the area, taxi officials said Saturday.

Water Taxi Service operations manager Aaron Stearns said the collapse occurred after its workers departed on Friday evening. Harbor Connector commuter service ended at 7 p.m., while water taxi service ended an hour prior.

"We found out on our first run [on Saturday morning]," Stearns said. As of Saturday afternoon, divers were in the Harbor waters inspecting structural damage. He said that the taxi service was awaiting word from the HarborView on when the pier would reopen.

An email sent to HarborView residents on Saturday said that no one was injured in the pier collapse and said that a dive team and structural engineers were assessing the pier's condition. Construction materials set atop the pier went into the water as well.
