P.G. County officer shoots, kills Landover man

Prince George's County police say an officer shot and killed a Landover man who pointed a gun at the officer Saturday.

Police spokesman Cpl. Henry Tippett says 35-year-old Rodney Edwards was lying in a grassy area on the side of Greenleaf Road in the Palmer Park area when an officer arrived to check on him. Police say Edwards pointed a gun at the officer, who drew his service weapon and fired. Edwards was taken to a hospital, where he died, police said.

The officer has been placed on administrative leave, police said. Police say they don't know why Edwards was lying next to the road or why he pulled the gun.

Tippett said the shooting was the 15th involving county officers in 2011.
