Lawmaker: Penn State scandal prompts Md. review

A Maryland lawmaker says the Penn State abuse scandal is prompting a review of state reporting requirements.

State Sen. Nancy Jacobs of Harford County says Maryland law does not have criminal penalties for failing to report child abuse. Maryland and Virginia have mandatory reporting requirements punishable by fines for failing to report abuse. Jacobs told Washington radio station WTOP that lawmakers were looking into criminal penalties on the books in other states.

Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Corbett says lawmakers in his state are also proposing changes.

A grand jury report says a Penn State coach molested boys as young as 10. That led to the ouster last week of coach Joe Paterno and the university's president amid questions about whether they did enough to stop or report the abuse.
