Cumberland votes to open pedestrian mall to vehicles, bikes

CUMBERLAND, Md. (AP) — Officials in Cumberland have voted to open the city's pedestrian mall to vehicle and bicycle traffic.

Cumberland Times-News reports that Mayor Brian Grim and the city council voted unanimously on the issue Tuesday.

The plan will place one-way streets with bicycle lanes at two locations and is estimated to cost between $3.7 million and $5 million.

The proposal was developed by design and engineering consultants Sage Policy Group and McCormick Taylor.

The move to open the mall to traffic was spurred by the need for underground infrastructure updates.
