Doris E. Tucker, a retired Army secretary and active church member, died Saturday in her sleep at Angel Assisted Living in Bowie where she had lived for the last two years. The former Laurel resident was 95.
The former Doris Elizabeth Charlotte, daughter of Edlow Charlotte, a reservoir worker, and his wife, Lillie Charlotte, a homemaker, was born and raised in Hopewell, Virginia, the only girl of five children.
After graduating from high school in Prince George, Virginia, she went to work as a union representative at the Gloria Manufacturing Co. In the 1960s, she graduated from Peninsula Business College in Newport News, Virginia, and became a secretary at the Fort Eustis Army Base in Newport News.
She was married in 1944 to Lawrence B. Tucker Sr., who worked in the transportation department at Fort Eustis. He died in 1998.
While living in Newport News, she had been active in the Golden Link, Chapter 89, of the Order of the Eastern Star of Virginia, which she had joined in 1952. She was also an active member and steward of the First Baptist Church of Newport News.
She is survived by her son, Lawrence B. Tucker Jr. of Glendale, Prince George’s County; a brother, Arnold Lee Charlotte of Petersburg, Virginia; five grandchildren; two nieces; and a nephew. Another son, Harvey E. Tucker, died in 2014.
