State-mandated fare increases on local buses, MARC trains and other Maryland Transit Administration services will go into effect on June 25, the MTA announced Tuesday.
The base fare on local buses, light rail and Metro trains will increase from $1.60 to $1.70, MARC train fares will increase by $1 and commuter bus fares will increase between 25 cents and $1.25 depending on the distance traveled.
Multi-use fares will also increase based on route, and paratransit fares will increase by 5 cents.
The changes are based on increases in the Consumer Price Index, which the General Assembly pegged fares to as part of the Transportation Infrastructure Investment Act of 2013.
The law requires the MTA to adjust core service fares for buses, light rail, Metro and paratransit every two years and for commuter buses and MARC trains every five years based on the CPI.
The law also increased gas taxes in the state, for which it is better known.
The June 25 implementation date for the increases comes just ahead of the first deadline — July 1 — for fare changes under the law.
