Funeral for Maryland doctor who died of Ebola held in Landover Hills

A funeral Mass for Dr. Martin Salia, the Maryland surgeon who had been working in Sierra Leone and contracted Ebola, then died Nov. 17, was scheduled Saturday at his home parish in Landover Hills.

St. Mary's Catholic Church announced on its website that the parish would be hosting the Mass, and wrote, "St. Mary's is truly grateful to have in our community families like the Salias, who live out the Catholic faith by making personal sacrifices to serve those in need."

Salia's wife, Isatu Salia, resides in New Carrollton.

Salia, a Sierra Leone native and a permanent U.S. resident, was gravely ill when he was flown from his home country to Omaha, Neb., for treatment. He died soon afterward.

The 44-year-old Salia was chief medical officer and surgeon at Kissy United Methodist Hospital in Freetown, the capital of Sierra Leone. His body was cremated.
