Fans might no longer need a flask to drink alcohol at Terps games. Under a new proposal, beer and wine could be sold at Maryland athletic events as soon as this fall.
The University of Maryland, College Park announced this week that President Wallace D. Loh is considering and seeking input on the student proposal to allow beer and wine sales to the public at athletic events.
Should the measure be approved, the net income from alcohol sales would go to "campus-wide student support activities such as mental health services, responsible drinking initiatives and diversity training," the university said.
As is the case at many events where alcohol is sold, the number of drinks one can purchase at a time would be limited, and alcohol sales would cease after the third quarter or midway through the second half of games "as appropriate," the school said.
A student submitted the proposal to Loh and the University Senate last spring, and it was recommended last month for review by the Athletic Council, which advises the president on sports issues.
Any approval of the plan would be provisional, and university officials would review the measure after its first year.
Loh said he wants to hear feedback on the proposal before making a decision, and comments are being accepted on the university's website at president.umd.edu/alcoholsales until Friday, April 24.
