Kayaker rescued from Potomac River

The Maryland State Police have rescued a kayaker who was submerged in the frigid waters of the Potomac River in Washington County.

Police say the kayaker became stranded at roughly 2 p.m. on Saturday in the river's icy waters just west of U.S. Route 340 Bridge in Sandy Hook. Police say the 54-year-old kayaker was submerged to his waist and clinging to a rock to avoid being swept downstream when a helicopter rescue team lowered a basket and hoisted the man to safety.
