A Maryland State Police trooper was flown to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center after being struck by a car on Interstate 95 Sunday night in Harford County, officials said.
State police said the crash occurred just before 10 p.m., when a 2009 Toyota Avalon driven by a 28-year-old New Jersey man entered into a marked off construction zone and struck the trooper's vehicle just south of the Aberdeen exit on Interstate 95, near mile marker 84.
Police identified the trooper a First Sergeant Robert Cummings, a 14-year veteran of the force assigned to the Communications Support Division. The trooper was flown to shock trauma for treatment.
The driver of the Toyota, identified as Christofe Taylor of Logan Township, N.J., was charged with various traffic and drug offenses. Police said Logan drove into the construction zone "for reasons unknown at this time." Police said a preliminary investigation revealed Taylor was in possession of a plastic bag of marijuana and suspected ecstasy.
Sgt. Cummings has been released from shock trauma, state police said Monday morning.
