Activist group eyes another investigation into Freddie Gray's death

An activist group said it plans to conduct an independent investigation into Freddie Gray's death.

Cortly "C.D." Witherspoon, an activist with the Peoples Power Assembly, and who has led previous rallies in Baltimore, expressed concerns about whether the police department would conduct a fair investigation into the six officers involved with the arrest of 25-year-old Gray, who died a week after he was loaded into the back of a police van.

"We do not have faith in the Mayor's office or the Baltimore City Police to conduct a fair and impartial investigation," Witherspoon said in a statement. "We base our lack of confidence on past cases such as Anthony Anderson and Tyrone West who were murdered by police. Therefore, we will do our own investigation."

At a new conference Thursday, the group announced it would conduct an independent investigation, lead by Terence Jones, whom they identified as a civil rights investigator.

Before a small crowd gathered at the corner of N. Mount and Presbury streets, Jones asked for transparency from the mayor and police.

"Let's makes this a fair, impartial and objective investigation," Jones said. "Let's not drag this out."
