Squirrel causes 1,900 power outages in Frederick

A squirrel caused 1,900 customers in the city of Frederick to lose power on Saturday, a power company spokesman said.

FirstEnergy Corp. spokesman Eyad Gheith told The Frederick News-Post that an animal contact incident occurred Saturday afternoon at a substation.

Gheith said a squirrel caused a circuit lockout. That caused a transformer to go out, he said, which led to the power outages.

Crews were working to replace the transformer that afternoon.

Gheith didn't know the condition of the squirrel.
