Five members of a Virginia family — including a pregnant woman and a 2-month-old boy — were killed in a crash with a tractor trailer in Queen Anne's County early Saturday morning, state police said.
The woman, Zerissa M. Ayres, 30, was taken in an ambulance to Easton Memorial Hospital where she and her unborn baby were pronounced dead, police said.
Ayres' sister, Regina M. Ayres, 24; Regina's boyfriend, Travis M. Straton, 25; their 2-month-old son Jonathan; and Regina's daughter Jordan, 7, were all pronounced dead at the scene.
The family was on their way to visit relatives in Baltimore and was driving in a Suzuki Forenza on Rt. 50 in Wye Mills shortly after 1 a.m. when they collided with the truck as they passed through an intersection, according to police.
The tractor trailer appeared to have rolled over the car before coming to rest and when troopers arrived it was overturned, police said.
The driver of the tractor trailer, Yvenet Mayette, 28, of Wilmington, was airlifted to University of Maryland Shock Trauma and had been discharged by Saturday night. He had picked up a 44,000 lb load of polyfiber and was heading home at the time of the accident, police said.
Officers are still trying to determine which vehicle had the red light, police said, and no charges have been filed. There is no evidence that alcohol was a factor in the crash, police said.
