A CSX train partially derailed Sunday morning in Northeast Washington and leaked hazardous material, officials said.
Several cars derailed about 6:40 a.m. in the area around 9th Street NE and Rhode Island Avenue, near Catholic University, according to the D.C. Fire Department. Rhode Island Avenue was closed. No injuries were reported.
One car was leaking sodium hydroxide, used to produce household products including paper, soap and detergents, CSX officials said. CSX and first responders were able to plug the leak and were working to clean up the hazardous material on Sunday afternoon, officials said.
Another derailed car was leaking non-hazardous calcium chloride solution, but has been sealed, CSX said. Another derailed car carrying ethanol was leaking slowly from the base of a valve and was being cleaned up, officials said.
The train, traveling from Cumberland to Hamlet, N.C., had three locomotives and 175 cars, including 94 loaded cars carrying mixed freight and 81 empty cars, according to CSX. Fourteen cars derailed, CSX said.
