A van carrying nine federal prisoners and being operated by the Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services crashed on a southern Pennsylvania interstate after being clipped by another vehicle on Monday.
None of the prisoners or guards were injured, said Gerard Shields, a department spokesman. The van struck the highway median, but the driver "was able to maintain control," Shields said.
The prisoners were being transported from the Chesapeake Detention Facility in downtown Baltimore, which holds federal prisoners and is operated by the state corrections department, to an airport in Harrisburg for transport to another facility in Oklahoma, Shields said.
After the accident, they were returned to Baltimore, he said.
