Maryland's 2016 graduates earned won more than $1.3 billion in college scholarship offers, nearly equaling the amount awarded to the class of 2015, according to the results of a new state survey.
The survey found that about one-third of the 2016 graduating class of 56,954 received scholarship offers last year. The scholarships included more than 150 National Merit finalists and more that 350 scholarship offers from Ivy League institutions.
The state has collected data for more than a decade on college and university scholarship offers. The total amount of scholarships includes offers from multiple universities to the same student.
Over the years, as college tuitions have risen, so have the scholarship amounts. Maryland graduates received less than $500 million in scholarship offers a decade ago; and passed the $1 billion threshold in 2013.
