Middle River businessman Robert A. Sersen has been elected to head the Mid-Atlantic branch of the Coast Guard Auxiliary.
"This is an incredibly fulfilling way to serve your country and to grow better informed, equipped, and prepared recreational boaters," Sersen said in a statement.
The Auxiliary is made up of about 30,000 civilian volunteers who aid the regular Coast Guard, in particularly promoting safety on the waterways. Sersen will hold the title of Commodore during his two-year term and will lead a district that includes Maryland, Virginia and North Carolina.
The Auxiliary can help the Coast Guard with any mission except those that involve military activity or law-enforcement.
"We are a close-knit family united by a shared purpose," Sersen said. "We are dedicated to the people we serve and those who serve with us."
