A 29-year-old man was sentenced in Baltimore County Circuit Court on Thursday to 25 years in prison for the 2011 murder of his mother, who was visiting him from Russia, according to county prosecutors.
Dmitry Pronin was originally charged with first-degree murder and pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in February, admitting he killed Yulia Pogrebenko, 54, as part of a plea agreement with prosecutors.
Pronin was living in Catonsville when his mother came to visit in February 2011. Pogrebenko never showed up for her return flight to Russia, and her dismembered remains were found months later – her torso discovered that June in the Chesapeake Bay, her head the next month on the shoreline in Kent County.
Pronin was sentenced by Judge Judith Ensor. He is currently serving a 10-year federal sentence for a bank robbery, and will serve the murder sentence after that, according to the county state's attorney's office.
