The condition of the 29-year-old woman who was shot in Owings Mills by the man who went on to kill two New York City police officers has improved, hospital officials confirmed.
Shaneka Thompson had been listed in critical condition at Maryland Shock Trauma Center, but on Tuesday the hospital said she was upgraded to "serious" condition. Police have said she was expected to survive injuries from being shot in the stomach inside her apartment near the Owings Mills Mall.
Baltimore County and New York City police said they briefly interviewed Thompson on Sunday night. They want to know more about Ismaaiyl Abdulah Brinsley, an ex-boyfriend who shot her in the stomach Saturday morning, then traveled to Brooklyn, N.Y., where he fatally shot police officers Wen Jian Liu, 32, and Rafael Ramos, 40.
Thompson is a member of the Air Force Reserves. Master Sgt. Kevin Brody confirmed that Thompson served as an Air Force Reservist in the 440th Medical Squadron, which is based at Pope Army Airfield in Fort Bragg, N.C. Thompson held the rank of staff sergeant and worked as a medical administrator, Brody said.
Police said Monday that Thompson's family members are declining to be interviewed by the news media.
