Michigan woman gets 60 years for murder of ex in Baltimore County

A Michigan woman was sentenced to 60 years in prison Thursday for the fatal shooting of her child's father in Baltimore County last year.

Deidra Veella Griffin, 41, had driven more than 500 miles from Bay City, Mich. to Randallstown to murder her ex-boyfriend, Lonnie Paye Jr., authorities said. She was found guilty of first-degree murder and use of a firearm in a crime of violence in June, one year after the killing.

Paye, a 51-year-old contractor, was found shot to death in his garage on July 1, but police believe he was killed on June 19.

Paye and Griffin were in a custody dispute and Paye was supposed to have a one-week visit with the child at the time of his disappearance last June.

Griffin had visited Maryland for a job interview, flew back to Michigan and returned to Maryland by car, officials said. Security camera footage at Paye's home in the 4300 block of Travancore Court showed a woman entering and leaving the home on June 19, prosecutors said.

Surveillance video and cell phone records indicated both Griffin and her rental car were in the area of Paye's home, prosecutors said.

Baltimore County Circuit Judge Justin King sentenced Griffin to 60 years in prison.
