Inner loop of 695 closed after truck fire on Key Bridge

A tractor trailer fire atop the Key Bridge shut down traffic Wednesday on the Baltimore Beltway, police said.

Baltimore County Police said just before 11:30 a.m. Wednesday that officers had shut down the inner loop of Interstate 695 at Peninsula Expressway, effectively stopping traffic in both directions after to the incident. The truck fire occurred on the outer loop of the beltway, with black smoke rising above the span across the Patapsco River.

The Maryland Transportation Authority officials said around 12:20 p.m. that the outer loop was reopened to traffic, while the inner loop remained closed.

There was no danger to the community, county police said.

Maryland Department of the Environment responded to the scene for fuel spill cleanup, according to the Maryland Transportation Authority.

The U.S. Coast Guard responded to the bridge, as well, according to Baltimore County officials.

Authority spokesman Tamory Winfield said the fire was extinguished in about 10 minutes, but the cleanup may keep lanes closed for a while. Winfield says there were no injuries. He says it's not clear yet how the fire started.
