Man shot, dies after Saturday confrontation with city police

A man died after being shot by Baltimore police early Saturday in an exchange of fire that the department said took place after the man shot and wounded his former wife.

An officer arrived at the 1800 block of Hope St. about 1:40 a.m. on a shooting call and encountered the man, who turned toward the officer and began firing his weapon, said Col. Jesse Oden, the department's chief of detectives.

The officer, a seven-year veteran from the Eastern District, returned fire, and the man was struck multiple times. The man, 54, was taken to Johns Hopkins Hospital and pronounced dead.

The officer, who was not injured, found a 51-year-old woman on the street with a neck wound. She was taken to a local hospital, Oden said.

Police released little information about the incident. They did not identify the man nor the officer, who is on routine administrative leave pending review of the shooting.

The estranged couple, police said, had been married at some point. Police were investigating whether there were previous domestic violence calls.

Police said it appeared that multiple shots were fired by both the officer and the man who was killed.
