A Frederick County man was arrested by police Wednesday after packing a prohibited item in his carry-on bag at BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport: a .32-caliber handgun.
Transportation Security Administration officers spotted the handgun as the man's bag passed through an X-ray machine.
TSA officers called in Maryland Transportation Authority Police, who seized the gun and cited the man.
Kelby Scott Ferwerda, 28, of Walkersville, was charged with carrying a handgun and interfering with airport security procedures, according to the Maryland Transportation Authority Police.
It was the 16th gun that TSA officers have spotted so far this year at BWI checkpoints, up from 14 guns found in 2014.
Guns are not allowed in carry-on bags on airplanes, according to TSA. Guns can only be flown in checked bags if they are unloaded, locked in hard-sided containers and declared to the airline.
