Police in Anne Arundel County identified the driver in a fatal, single-vehicle auto accident Thursday night.
Police said Rupert Tawan Nick, 33, of Columbia Beach Road in Shady Side, was declared dead after his 2004 white Ford Crown Victoria veered off the road at a curve and struck a utility pole and several trees. The crash occurred shortly before 6:30 p.m. on Shady Side Road near Cedarhurst Road.
Police said alcohol and excessive speed appear to have contributed.
Shady Side Road was closed to traffic from Muddy Creek Road to Route 256.
