Naval Academy on track to break application record

The dean of admissions at the U.S. Naval Academy says the school is on track to have even more applications than last year's record number.

Dean Latta told the academy's Board of Visitors on Monday that as of March 1 there have been 20,602 applications. That's compared to 19,138 last year.

Overall, applications are up about 7 percent, compared to the same time last year.

Latta also says more women are applying. Last year, there were 4,490 female applicants, as of March 1. This year, there have been 4,819 so far.

Minority applications are up from 6,657 to 6,956.

The students of the class of 2016 will be competing for fewer spots. Latta says the class of 2015 has about 1,220 students. The class of 2016 will have about 1,190.
