Man, 45, charged with assaulting officer while being removed from Gambrills bar

A 45-year-old man was charged with assaulting an Anne Arundel County police officer after he kicked an officer who removed him from a Gambrills bar Saturday night for fighting and refusing to pay his bill, police said.

Charles Alyosius Ryan III, of the 2200 block of Sansbury Drive in Chesapeake Beach, is charged with assault, disorderly conduct and failure to obey reasonable, lawful police orders.

Officers called at 8:39 p.m. to the Irish Channel Pub in the 1000 block of Rt. 3 in North Gambrills found him being restrained by three people, shouting profanities and trying to fight the bar's staff, with "a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from his breath," police said.

Ryan refused to show identification and was uncooperative, police said. After being placed in handcuffs in the police car, he continued to swear and resist, tensing his muscles and kicking the officer, then threatened the officer and "made racially disparaging remarks."

Court documents for the incident had not yet been posted to the state's online database Wednesday night. He pleaded guilty to a disorderly conduct charge in September 1991, according to court records.
