ORANJESTAD, Aruba — The prosecutor's office in Aruba says a U.S. woman has gone missing on the Caribbean island and the American man she was traveling with has been detained while police investigate.
Spokeswoman Ann Angela says 35-year-old Robyn Gardner of Frederick was reported missing by her travel partner after the two went snorkeling off the western tip of the island. Authorities searched the water and coastline of the island, but she is still listed as missing.
Police detained 50-year-old Gary V. Giordano as he attempted to leave Aruba on Friday. Angela said Monday that he is being investigated on suspicion of involvement in her disappearance. Giordano's lawyer did not return phone calls seeking comment.
