Man rescued from water in Annapolis, treated for hypothermia

A man was rescued from a creek in Annapolis and transferred to a hospital late Saturday night for symptoms of hypothermia, according to the Anne Arundel County Fire Department.

Emergency crews responded to the first block of Weems Creek Drive about 8:40 p.m. for a 911 call and found the man "clinging to a sailboat" in the waters of Weems Creek, said Capt. Michael Pfaltzgraff, a department spokesman. Weems Creek connects to the Severn River, just south of the Severn River Bridge.

Members of the department's dive team spent about 20 minutes getting the man out of the water, Pfatlzgraff said. Personnel also responded from the Annapolis Fire Department.

The man, whose age and identity were not released, was taken in serious condition to Anne Arundel Medical Center, "primarily for hypothermia," and is expected to survive, Pfaltzgraff said.

Pfaltzgraff said he did not know how long the man had been in the water. Police are investigating.
