Health supplies loan closet to close at end of year

The medical supplies loan closet located in the former Loch Raven Elementary School at 1801 Glen Keith Boulevard operated by the Ninth District Health Committee will close at the end of the year.

Bette Decker, chairwoman of the committee, said the five or so volunteers who staff the loan closet on Tuesday mornings are elderly or have moved away and not able to continue operating the loan closet. The closet makes available such items as wheelchairs, walkers, crutches, canes, bath benches and bed rails; and on some a refundable deposit is required.

The Towson loan closet has its beginnings in 1952 when the Baltimore County Health Department operated 15 health centers each with its own loan closet. Since then, all centers have disappeared and all but the Ninth District Health Committee's loan closet have closed with them.

Decker, who worked as a public health nurse until she retired in 1983, said she wanted to get the word out about the closet closing so that those who have items can return them in time to get their deposits refunded. For more information, call the loan closet on Tuesdays at 410-665-0898.
