After a brief storm Wednesday afternoon, the sun shone through the clouds just outside the new entrance of Jake's New York Deli & Catering in downtown Towson.Sunlight used to be scarce at the deli, which was previously situated in the basement of a building on Washington Avenue that sits across the street from the Historic Courthouse. But on Memorial Day the deli moved upstairs, following about two years of work to renovate a former greeting card shop into an eatery, and the move has brought more customers to the deli, according to owner Diane Chiaro. The deli didn't close during the renovation, which included adding a kitchen to the upstairs space, Chiaro said. The deli now has frontage on Washington Avenue, while before it was difficult to find, she added."If you didn't know we were there, you weren't going to fall in," Chiaro said.Kim McMenamin and Ashley Coburn, two Baltimore County Public Schools employees who work at the county-owned Jefferson Building, which lies catty-corner to the restaurant, ate at the deli Wednesday. McMenamin said she has been coming to the deli for about two years to get grilled cheese with pickles — though on Wednesday she had the shrimp salad, which she said she liked. She would not have known about the old location unless someone had taken her there, she said, adding that she likes the move."It's quick dining, and it's good," McMenamin said.Chiaro said the move has allowed the deli to use space more efficiently — instead of having multiple rooms, the restaurant is open, with a deli counter up front and seating in the back."It's easier to work," she said.Chiaro said she and her husband, Anthony, bought the deli in 2011. They added "New York" to the name — both she and her husband are from Long Island. The couple also operated New York Deli in Columbia for several years, Chiaro said. The previous owner brought the "Jake" to the title of the business, which was the name of his pet dog. A mural of the dog, with golden hair and holding a signed Baltimore Ravens football, was painted on the wall downstairs, according to Chiaro. When the deli moved upstairs, she got a photo of the dog mural to hang in the rear of the restaurant."There's Jake, and he's happy and he's here," Chiaro said, looking up at the picture. The menu hasn't changed with the updated location, Chiaro said, though they are adding an item or two, such as coffees and teas from Baltimore Coffee and Tea.The renovation is still a work in progress. Currently a temporary "Jake's NY Deli We're Open" sign hangs above the entrance, but that will be replaced with a permanent sign, Chiaro said.
