If your children love to sing, this might be a great opportunity for them. The Children's Chorus of Maryland & School of Music, one of the region's oldest children's choruses and now in its 40th season, is holding auditions for children ages 5 to 11 on May 2, 27 and June 13 at the school on East Towsontown Boulevard.

"Our choirs perform locally during the academic year at well-known regional and national venues," said Tina Owens, marketing director of the music school. "They have earned spots in a variety of children's choral festivals in the U.S. and abroad."

The school's program welcomes families whose children attend public, private and parochial schools as well as those who are home-schooled. Merit and need-based scholarships are also available. Previous singing experience is not necessary, and interested families are asked to sign up for an audition time online at ccmsings.org. For information, call 410-494-1480.

Ascension Lutheran Nursery School participated in its Second Annual Soles4Souls shoe collection campaign (www.soles4souls.org) in honor of Earth Day on April 22. Also, Charm City Run specialty store, in Timonium, has agreed again this year to send the shoes to Soles4Souls.

Deirdre Barone, of Stoneleigh, and a preschool teacher at Ascension, sees the campaign as an opportunity to teach the children empathy.

"As a school, we feel it is important for preschool children to embrace the three Rs of environmental education — reduce, reuse, recycle to promote empathy," Barone said. "Our promoting empathy in preschool children enables them to be aware that other people have feelings and emotions, too."

Barone hopes that the successful campaign at Ascension will inspire and motivate others to do the same.

Show dates are April 30 and May 1-2. Each performance begins at 7 p.m. Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for students and children. For information, call 410-887-3549.
