Grand Parade slated to return to state fair [Lutherville-Timonium]

Bring together vintage cars, 4-H Club floats, marching bands, color guards, horses and antique farming equipment and you've got a parade. For the first time since 1981, the Maryland State Fair is bringing back what was for many years a fair favorite — the Grand Parade.

This event, which is part of the festivities planned for the fair's 135th anniversary this summer, will be held on Sunday, Aug. 28 at 6 p.m. The return of the parade, which will circle the grandstand track, promises to add an extra layer of enjoyment for attendees. Ribbons and cash awards will be given to first, second, and third place entries representing: floats, vehicles, and novelty units; horses; marching bands; and walking and performing groups.

Space remains in the parade line-up for organizations wishing to participate. Those interested in joining in the fun must complete a registration form by August 1. For more information, contact Brooke Cashman at bcashman@marylandstatefair.com.

The Stella Maris 32nd Annual Crab Feast and Auction will be held at the Maryland State Fairgrounds on Sunday, Oct. 23, from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. This fundraiser offers all-you-can-eat crabs, pit beef, pit turkey, and other delicious foods, along with music, games, raffles, live and silent auctions, game wheels, and even a big-screen television providing minute-by-minute access to the Baltimore Ravens football game scheduled for that day.

The development office of Stella Maris is collecting items that can be bid upon, and is seeking donated items from individuals and businesses. The money this event raises benefits patients and families receiving care from Stella Maris' hospice programs. Tickets are $75.00 per person. For more information on making contributions, or to purchase tickets, go to www.stellamariscrabfeast.org, or call 410-252-4500, ext. 7268.
