Towson girls lacrosse edges Dulaney on senior day

Junior attacker Maggie Schneidereith has the best shot on the Towson High School girls lacrosse team.

That's something with which Madison Hine would concur after Schneidereith whistled a 5-yard line drive past the Dulaney goalie with two minutes remaining, giving the Generals a 10-9 victory over the visiting Lions on senior day.

Schneidereith, a Johns Hopkins University recruit, also scored the goal that tied the game at 9-9 with 6:35 remaining.

She came from behind the net and did a crease roll, faking a shot one way and shooting the other.

"I looked at her when she came out of the game after twisting her ankle," Towson coach Jamie Giffuni said of the middle of the second half. "I said, 'Get out there and take control.' She said, 'I will.' And she did."

Schneidereith finished with four goals and two assists. Schneidereith's sister Lucy had three goals and teammate Alicia de Filipi added two goals.

The performance of Towson goalie Haley Hicklen, however, can't be overlooked.

The University of Florida-bound senior made 18 saves, including two stops on shots by junior midfielder Melanie Gandy (2 goals) in the final minute.

"Today was one of her better games of the year, and she came up with the clutch saves when we needed her to," Giffuni said. "It's a coach's dream to have a goalie like her."

Dulaney (8-3) had trailed for most of the game, but the Lions took their first lead with about 10 minutes remaining.

Junior midfielder Annie Sachs scooped up Lucia Tarantino's rebound after it hit the post and beat Hicklen with a blistering shot to the right corner for her fifth goal of the game.

But Dulaney couldn't generate much offense until the final minute, registering four shots, including two by Audrey Stenersen.

Dulaney coach Kristi Korrow praised her team for rebounding after a lackluster first half.

"We did better with our ball control and movement on the attack," Korrow said. "They put us on back our heels so we knew we had to come out stronger in the second half. Towson had a great first half. They came out and jumped on us. They were really ready to play us."

Towson (9-2) hit Dulaney with three goals in the first four minutes and all three came from Lucy Schneidereith.

The Generals built a 5-1 lead by the middle of the first half and led 6-4 at halftime.

"Every year, we came out really strong," Maggie Schneidereith said. "It's our rival. We came off two really big losses to Hereford and Catonsville. So we were here to really prove we can play with the best teams in the county."
