Locksley leads Gilman football in 43-0 romp past Loyola

A Gilman football victory over Loyola Blakefield is coming close to being a sure thing. The Greyhounds made it six straight blowout wins over the Dons with a 43-0 rout in Roland Park Friday.

Gilman had too much speed and too many offensive weapons for Loyola in a Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference game.

The Greyhounds piled up 266 yards on the ground as senior running back/wide receiver Jelani Roberts led the way 130 yards rushing and a touchdown on 10 carries.

Senior quarterback Kai Locksley scored three touchdowns and had 140 yards combined rushing and passing.

Junior tailbacks Dorien Maddox and Antonio Dupree also each ran for a score.

“We were very effective running the ball today. Our success there opened up the passing game,” said Gilman coach Biff Poggi, noting the precision passing of Locksley (6-for-7). “And our offensive line played very well. They are getting better in every game.”

Gilman (5-2 overall, 3-0 league) set the tone by scoring on its first two possessions.

Locksley got the Greyhounds, who have won games in a row, rolling on its first series. He capped an 8-play 60-yard drive on a 1-yard run up the middle working behind the big and physical offensive line of Brendan Shaw, Wes Mehl, Jahee Jackson, Michael Perry and Stephen Spanellis.

The Greyhounds jumped ahead 13-0 with 4:37 remaining in the first quarter on Roberts’ 5-yard run.

Gilman boosted its lead to 16-0 about four minutes into the second quarter on a safety. After linebacker Shamar Shanks stripped the ball from quarterback Jason Smith at the 2-yard line, Darren Seward fell on it in the end zone.

The game all but seemed over when Locksley, who has committed to Florida State, rushed for his second touchdown late in the second quarter to make it 22-0.

Alex Cohill then booted one of his five extra points.

Loyola had five first downs in the first half, but three came on penalties.

“We just couldn’t match up with them very well,” said Loyola coach Brant Hall said, whose team failed to get past midfield. “They are big, fast and strong. They are one of the best football teams in the state without a doubt. Hopefully, one day we can get to where they are.”

Dupree and Locksley rushed for touchdowns and backup quarterback Kasim Hills threw a touchdown pass to account for the Greyhounds’ second-half points.

Gilman’s defense, spearheaded by strong performances from lineman Ellison Jordan, safety Sawyer Lynch and linebacker Maddox, limited Loyola to 65 yards of total offense.

“Defensively, we were shutting down everything,” Locksley said. “Our coverage was especially great.”
