On June 19, the Blakehurst Residents’ Scholarship Foundation presented scholarships to 46 employees of the Blakehurst Senior Living Community in West Towson. The private scholarships are primarily funded through resident contributions and are also supported by memorials and acknowledgements. Since 2003, the program has awarded more than 500 scholarships, totaling more than $750,000.

“The residents here think it is a very good program to benefit staff and support their continuing education and help them with their careers and their future,” says foundation president Robert Schaefer. Each year, about 40 to 50 Blakehurst staff members — high school seniors, college students and adults — apply to the program. Applications are reviewed and tiered to four levels of funding. So far, every applicant has received funds to help further their education.
