Checkers Drive-In, a fast food chain specializing in burgers and milkshakes, could open a franchise in Towson before the end of the year, a company official said.

Robert Bhagwandat, director of franchise development for Checkers & Rally’s, said that once the design is completed in a few weeks, the timeline will depend on how quickly the proposed restaurant at 910 Taylor Avenue is approved by the county.

“If all the stars are aligned and everything goes well, we could have this opened up by the holiday season,” Bhagwandat said.

If the restaurant is approved, the construction process would only take about eight weeks because the restaurants use modular buildings, Bhagwandat said.

The new spot for Vietnamese coffee and desserts is scheduled to open in late May, owner Calvin Luu said.

Checkers, headquartered in Tampa, Fl., currently has 32 restaurants in Maryland.

“I like to call Checkers ‘year-round Black Friday,” Bhagwandat said, saying the brand appeals to people who want a fast meal packed with flavor” on the cheap.

Bhagwandat said with the nearby Carney and Pikesville locations doing well, adding a restaurant in the Towson area makes sense for the fast food chain.

“It’s a thoroughfare, and a lot of people pass through it,” Bhagwandat said.
