The Towson Times won eight awards in the Maryland-Delaware-D.C. Press Association's 2014 editorial contest.
Results announced May 1 for non-dailies in Division D, consisting of more than 20,000 circulation, the newspaper took home three first-place and five second-place awards.
First-place awards for Multimedia Storytelling in both the news and feature categories went to Jon Sham, for stories about a midnight ride to help the homeless, and about a bystander who filmed an arrest and talked about interacting with police. Sham also won second place in the Multimedia Storytelling feature category, for a story about "Sopranos" actor Dominic Chianese performing at Stella Maris in Timonium.
Sham also won first place for Best Web Video, for a story about Little Joe, a terminally ill beagle, who had a bucket list.
John Scheinman won second place in the Sports Feature category, for a story about Preakness Stakes coordinator Coley Blind.
Larry Perl won second place in the Religion Reporting and Feature Story: Profile categories, for two separate stories about special-need adults. One story was about members of a Boy Scout Troop attaining the rank of Eagle Scout. The other was about the Heartlights program at Towson Presbyterian Church.
Barbara Pash and Elizabeth Eck won second place for a story about the 150-year-old University of Maryland St. Joseph Medical Center and its mission to provide compassionate care.
Baltimore Sun Media Group community newspapers took 5 best in show, 38 other first place awards and 41 second place awards. The Aegis, in Harford County, was named newspaper of the year in Division D.
Best of Show awards are first-place awards within a division designated by circulation that are also considered the best work among all divisions in the same category.
