A new development is set to bring 100 apartments into downtown Towson.
Federal Realty Investment Trust is behind the project and officials there are targeting a mid-2016 opening for the complex, a mix of one- and two-bedroom units, Lisa Geiger, company spokeswoman, said.
The building is planned for 627 York Road, near the existing SunTrust Bank branch. An informational meeting is set for Tuesday, July 22, at 7 p.m. in the East Towson Carver Community Center, at 300 Lennox Ave. No rendering of the project was yet available, Geiger said.
Paul Hartman, president of the Greater Towson Council of Community Associations, said he has seen the plans for the site and landscape and that his organization supports the project. He said the development forms and L around the SunTrust branch, and entrances to the garage are on West Joppa Road and Washington Avenue, with a main entrance at that intersection.
"We really don't think it would have an impact other than the same any development would have, which is traffic and congestion," Hartman said.
Towson Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Nancy Hafford said the new building, one of several in the works in the Towson area, addresses a still-high demand for housing in the Towson core.
"We have great restaurants, great shopping, but people want to live in Towson," she said. "People want to live there, but we just don't have enough places for them right now."
Hafford added that she hopes the new property follows the lead of the Palisades apartment complex and Bozzuto's Towson Green housing development, both of which target upper-income professionals and families.
Fifth district County Councilman David Marks said the project, when completed, would be an economic boon for Towson's core. It would join other recent projects like Towson Green and the Palisades apartment building.
"We need residential growth in Downtown Towson so this area does not empty out on the weeknights and weekends, so I think this is a welcome project," he wrote in an email. "However, with the cumulative impact of so many developments, its time to nail down a transportation plan that involves a circulator and start to address the lack of green space in the Towson core."
