Golf is a sport that can be enjoyed by all ages, and during this time of COVID-19, it is the ideal pastime for the socially distant, stay-outside mandates.
Hunt Valley Golf Club, which just celebrated its 50th anniversary, has played host to a couple of exciting events over the past few weeks.
The first bit of fun at Hunt Valley Country Club came on July 15 when longtime member Bernie Egliskis shot a hole in one. It was on the second hole on the red course, which is a par-3 hole just shy of 200 yards.
Congratulations to Bernie on a great shot!
Then, Colin Vineberg, representing the Hunt Valley Golf Club, won the 2020 Jimmy Flattery Championship in the Boys Champs 13-15 division on July 28.
Colin is a 15-year-old rising sophomore at St Paul’s School who shot an impressive 155 to win the tournament.
This was the 85th playing of the Jimmy Flattery Championship, which has been hosted at Hunt Valley Golf Club since the mid-1970s. It is part of the Junior Tour of Maryland in the Middle Atlantic PGA Section.
Started by golf pro Jimmy Flattery in 1936 at Forest Park Golf Course in Baltimore, the event was organized by Flattery as a tournament for 11-18-year-old golfers. He loved working with children and had a great influence on so many young golfers.
Flattery later moved the tournament to Hunt Valley when he retired from Forest Park and began offering lessons at Hunt Valley. It was his fondest and dying wish to have the tournament continue, so he would be pleased to see it still going strong 85 years later.
Other area golfers who participated were Jackson Guy, Tommy Sharps and Jackson Dollenberg.
Just like everything else these days, the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) had to pivot and make their FBLA National Leadership Conference virtual instead of holding a 20,000-plus gathering in Salt Lake City this year.
FBLA is quite active in many of our local high schools, with schools like Dulaney High School often boasting a large contingent of students who qualify through several levels of competition in order to compete at the national conference.
According to Dr. Kara Lynch, BCPS supervisor of business, computer science and homeland security education, “Students were challenged with creating videos and taking online tests to demonstrate their skills in the areas of business, computer science and computer networking. Our students have been preparing all year long by participating in regional and state level events.”
Several Dulaney students earned national honors this year, including Kathy Yao, who earned ninth place in a website design event sponsored by Facebook Education. Kathy also was awarded with Business Achievement Awards for creating a portfolio of real-world accomplishments.
The team of Allen Chen, Saimadhav Sakhamuri and Steven Zhang earned fifth place in the computer game and simulation programming event.
Congratulations to these hard-working students on their national recognition.
