Towson University named an interim coach of the swimming and diving team Tuesday as an investigation continues into a smartphone found last month recording athletes in the women's locker room.
Jake Shrum, who had been an assistant coach, was promoted to interim coach Tuesday. The university hired Tim Perkins as a temporary diving coach.
"Jake has already demonstrated tremendous leadership under the present circumstances and we are confident in his ability to continue to provide stability for the team," athletic director Tim Leonard said in a statement.
University officials would not comment on the status of the team's other coaches: head coach Pat Mead, diving coach Maureen Mead and assistant coach Adrienne Phillips. They were still listed as coaches on the team's website Tuesday.
University officials have released little information about the Oct. 16 incident, in which swimmers found the smartphone in their locker room at Burdick Hall. The recording was limited to the team locker room, which is not open to the public, the university said.
The university's statement said officials are working to conclude the investigation "as swiftly as possible."
The teams will not compete in the Pittsburgh Invite at the University of Pittsburgh this weekend. University officials said the decision to skip the meet was necessary to allow the athletes to "refocus, recover, and regroup and to prepare to restart the competition schedule in January."
Earlier Tuesday, university officials acknowledged reports that some of the swimmers were planning a boycott of the meet.
The Baltimore Sun has requested the police report and other records regarding the investigation under the Maryland Public Information Act, but has not yet received a response. Towson's student newspaper, The Towerlight, made a similar request, and initially was told the university would charge more than $2,000 to compile the records. The university later agreed to provide the records to the student newspaper at no cost. The newspaper has not yet received the documents.
