Police identify Toys "R" Us robbery suspect who was found hiding inside a box

A man who attempted to rob a Toys "R" Us in Towson Wednesday ran back inside the store and hid until officers found him hiding inside a box, Baltimore County police said.

The department identified the suspect on Thursday as Elbert Darell Crump, 45, of the 1600 block of Mussula Road in Towson. Police had previously said Crump was 25.

He is charged with armed robbery, assault and additional charges, and is being held at the county detention center.

Police said he entered the store, flashed a handgun, and demanded money from the registers while several people inside the store called police.

Multiple units, including Chief James Johnson who was in the area, began arriving at the store around 1:40 p.m. Police said many employees and customers fled the store, including Crump, who then ran back inside the building and hid after he saw the responding officers.

Police secured the area, closing several stores and area roads. About an hour after police were called, tactical officers entered the store and quickly found him in a box, and arrested him without incident.

Police said no shots were fired and no one was injured, however one person was taken to a local hospital for treatment of a condition unrelated to the robbery.

In September, Crump was charged with theft in the city, but the charge was dropped, court records show.

Crump did not have an attorney listed in court records.
