Roland Park field hockey falls to Garrison Forest

The Garrison Forest field hockey team continues to weave a winning path through the Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland A Conference.

The Grizzlies (6-3) dominated host Roland Park Country School with a 4-0 victory Tuesday afternoon.

Junior forward Amanda Fruman had two goals and Samantha Fiedler and Nicole Legar each added one.

"They had good speed and the ability to hold onto to the ball," Roland Park coach Amy Popp said. "And they had powerful hits. That's something I think that sets them apart from some of the other teams we have played."

Popp saw her defense of Lexi Orlinsky and Kelly Fennessy and goalie Spencer Sutley get tested right away.

The Grizzlies outshot the Reds, 5-0, in the first 12 minutes.

Garrison Forest went ahead 1-0 when Fruman punched Ali Baratta's crossing pass from seven yards out about five minutes into play.

The Grizzlies made it 2-0 with 11:33 remaining in the first half. Fiedler beat a defender and then Sutley with a back-handed shot to the right corner.

Roland Park (3-4-1) didn't get any shots off until the second part of the first half.

"We are slow starters and it does take us a little while to get warmed up," Popp said. "(Late) in the first half, we were making good connecting passes and that's when we started getting our groove."

Roland Park had consecutive penalty corners to start the second half and the Reds best chance to score came on Bella Beattie's blistering shot, but it was blocked by Fieldler.

Garrison Forest boosted its lead to 3-0 with 24:05 left as Fruman scored on a feed from Natalie Adamez.

"You have to play from start to finish and we did," Garrison Forest coach Traci Davis said. "We wanted to have that kind of mentality because this is a tough game and in the A Conference, anybody can turn a lead into a tie. "

Legar finished the scoring. Celia Donner was credited with the assist.

The Grizzlies will face Roland Park again Oct. 6 in Owings Mills.

"I expect we will be a different Roland Park team on our turf," Davis said. "They did not give up. They played a solid two halves."
