Dulaney field hockey blanks Notre Dame Prep

The Notre Dame Prep field hockey team took most of the shots, but visiting Dulaney had the one that made the difference.

Dulaney senior Emma Klein scored with 23:04 remaining in the second half off a penalty corner to lift the Lions to a 1-0 victory.

Klein, stationed right in front of the goal post, tipped Claire Podles' blistering shot past netminder Lucy Lowe as Dulaney improved to 3-0.

Klein has four goals in three games after racking up 20 last year for a team that lost in the Class 4A state semifinals to Wootton.

"She has been one of my clutch players for three years," Dulaney coach Kellie Fialcowitz said. "She does a great job with deflections into the cage. She positions herself very well in an area where she can score."

The Blazers, who outshot Dulaney 25-6, started with a flourish, pressuring the Lions' goal to the tune of five penalty corners in the first 15 minutes.

Dulaney senior Lydia Naughton blocked Catherine Keirn's shot that ended that stretch.

Naughton also blocked another one, which was taken by Grace Haus, toward the end of the half.

NDP held a 7-1 advantage in penalty corners in the first half and 16-4 overall.

"We dominated them for the entire game," said NDP coach Katrina Ross, whose team was playing in its season opener. "We just couldn't finish. That's something we are going to work on. It's a great starting point for our season."

Klein scored on Dulaney's first shot of the game.

The Blazers missed scoring the game-tying goal with about 19 minutes remaining when Lions' senior goalie Alli Hill made back-to-back saves on shots from sophomore Rachel Borzymowski, including a point-blank attempt.

The closest NDP came to scoring came late as the Blazers failed to convert two penalty corners.

Ellie Dreschler disrupted Haus' shot attempt with eight seconds remaining on the first one.

Then, Borzymowski lost control of the ball after time had expired.

Naughton was there to knock it out of the 16-yard circle to end the game.

"They are a great team," Fialcowitz said of NDP. "But we can hang with any team in the state."
