Friday was supposed to be senior night for the Catonsville High field hockey team.

But a scheduling change moved that to Monday, Oct. 17 against Century High.

That didn't stop the Comet seniors from starting a long senior weekend with a convincing 3-0 victory over Towson (4-6).

Seniors Brittany Stevens, Ashlyn Cunningham and Allison Campbell scored the goals and senior midfielder Ashley Bates and senior defenders Madi Jones and Molly Miller played outstanding games as the Comets (7-4) controlled the ball and time of possession.

They are six of the eight seniors on the roster that also includes Stefana Avara and Meghan Herilla.

It wasn't just the seniors that did the damage.

Junior midfielder Zoey Waddell and sophomore midfielder Kelsey Jones also chimed in with stellar play along with junior defender Molly Buetnner.

Although sophomore goalie Madison Manalanson only made four saves, she was in cage for the Comets' third shutout in the past five games.

"They all played really well," Catonsville coach Carrie Mckenna-Wilson said. "We made good passes, and we finished. We had a hard time finishing in the past so we worked a lot in practice on body positioning and going to goal with our feet forward and I thought they did a great job with that tonight."

Stevens started the scoring on a penalty corner that began with her insert pass.

Kelsey Jones shot off of the pads of starting Towson goalie Caroline Ready (8 saves) and Stevens shot another one off the pads and then canned the rebound with 12:24 left in the first half.

"We wanted to come out strong and that's what we did," Stevens said. "We all crashed in and it ended up bouncing back and I hit it in."

Less than a minute later, Stevens was again involved in building the lead to 2-0 when she assisted Cunningham after her shot was repelled by Ready.

"I wasn't really expecting it to come to me, but I was in that position and I just got it and shot it without even thinking about it," Cunningham said.

Towson's best chance to score in the first half came in the first five minutes when a penalty corner pass by Hannah Connelly led to a shot by Shaeleigh Lacasse that was saved by Manalanson.

Kathryn Ertel also had a shot on goal in the first half.

The Comets peppered the Towson defense in the second half with shots in the circle by Campbell, Cunningham, Sydney Keagle, Waddell and Grace Pound.

But they couldn't solve the Towson defense, led by Dalia Kassas, Rachel May and Margo Glazer, until Campbell scored with 8:05 left in the game after being perched at the post.

"Allison was on post to tap it in and that was awesome," McKenna-Wilson said.

Towson coach Sam Merrick was impressed by Catonsville's stamina.

"They are fast and they stayed strong the entire game," Merrick said. "We have a strong defense and they stayed with it."

Following senior night against Century, the Comets play at Hereford on Oct. 20 in a game that could determine if they will play in the Baltimore County championship game Oct. 22.

"I think if we would have a shot we would have to beat Hereford," said Mckenna-Wilson, whose squad's only loss in Baltimore County came against Dulaney. "It's going to come down to the wire."

Cunningham is looking forward to senior night.

"I think we are going to come out hard because this was really a tough game for us and we really wanted to win and we really want to win on Monday and it's our senior night and I think we are going to come out hard," she said.
